I know this is your first manipulation, so I am only going to be constructively critical, all righty?
Tis a VERY good first attempt and you did a very good job at erasing backgrounds around the images. Placement is good, too, as well as concept.
Here are my helpful tips though:
1.) You must make all the things in the picture match in colour. Since you have a bluish moon and background, the light on him AND her should also be bluish-white. You can do this by experimenting with variations. (That's PhotoShop and I don't know how GIMP works, so my apologies if that's not the right command in GIMP.)
2.) VERY IMPORTANT are the directions of shadows. The moon is behind them so of course, he doesn't need a ground shadow and the shadows already on his person are perfect... But, her shadow should be cast all the way down those steps.
3.) A very subtle outline around the people in one of the lighter moon colours would just make this POP! (Just where you see the moon casting its light, ya know?) This is an acquired skill and requires a very steady hand unless you have a tablet. I don't and it's taken me a very long time to get painting with the mouse DOWN.
All in all... I think this is a very decent first manip.
BRAVO, Love.
And, if you have ANY questions or trouble with any more or wish to collaborate with me, so I could lay the final touches down on your pics, just let me know... Don't hesitate. I would love to help you in any way I can, Hun.
